Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters and the world's tallest free-standing mountain. Rising from the agricultural plains of northern Tanzania near Moshi, it is a distinctive flat-topped volcanic massif visible from over 200 kilometers away on clear days. Trekking to the summit is achievable by fit, non-technical climbers, making it one of the most popular high-altitude climbs in the world.

Trekking Routes

Seven established routes ascend Kilimanjaro. The Marangu Route is the most straightforward with dormitory-style huts. The Machame Route is the most scenic and popular for camping. The Lemosho Route is preferred for higher success rates due to better acclimatization. The Rongai Route approaches from the north through quieter terrain. Route choice significantly impacts success rate, experience quality, and cost.

Ecological Zones

Climbing Kilimanjaro passes through five distinct ecological zones: cultivated lower slopes, montane rainforest rich in colobus monkeys and elephant, heath and moorland with giant heather and senecio plants, alpine desert with dramatic night-time temperature drops, and the arctic summit zone with glaciers and the volcanic crater of Kibo.

Combining Kilimanjaro with Safari

Many travellers combine a Kilimanjaro trek with a Northern Circuit safari for the ultimate Tanzania experience. Spending 6 to 9 days on the mountain followed by 5 to 7 days on safari creates a complete journey that covers both adventure and wildlife.
