Lake Eyasi
Home of the Hadzabe Hunter-Gatherers and the Datoga Blacksmiths

Lake Eyasi — Overview

Tanzania's Most Authentic Cultural Destination

Lake Eyasi sits in a shallow soda depression on the floor of the Rift Valley at the base of the Ngorongoro Highlands. While the lake itself supports flamingos and migratory waterbirds, its primary significance for safari travellers is cultural: the two indigenous communities living along its shores represent some of Africa's last surviving traditional lifestyles.

The Hadzabe People – Africa's Last Hunter-Gatherers

The Hadzabe are a small ethnic group of approximately 1,200 to 1,500 people who continue to live as hunter-gatherers, an unbroken lifestyle that stretches back at least 10,000 years. Their language uses click consonants similar to the San people of southern Africa. Visits to Hadzabe camps are arranged in cooperation with community leaders. Guests join a morning hunt using traditional bows and arrows and participate in gathering roots and berries.

Datoga Blacksmiths

The neighboring Datoga community are traditional pastoralists and skilled metalworkers who forge arrowheads for the Hadzabe and ornamental jewelry sold at markets. A visit to the Datoga smithy provides a fascinating glimpse into artisanal metalworking traditions that predate the colonial era.

The Drive and Scenery

The road to Lake Eyasi from Karatu passes through a dramatic section of the Rift Valley escarpment with sweeping views across the plains below. The journey itself is part of the experience, passing through Maasai bomas, farmland, and semi-arid scrub before reaching the lake basin.
