October & November – Shoulder Season — What to Expect
October and November offer a balanced safari experience in Tanzania, combining good wildlife viewing with fewer crowds and attractive travel rates. As the short rains begin, the landscapes slowly turn green again, creating beautiful scenery and excellent photography conditions. Wildlife remains easy to spot in Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire National Park, while migratory birds start returning to the region. This shoulder season is perfect for travelers seeking a quieter, more relaxed safari experience without missing Tanzania’s incredible wildlife encounters.
October and November – Tanzania's Shoulder Season
October and November represent a transition period in Tanzania's safari calendar. The Great Migration herds begin their return southward from the Masai Mara and Northern Serengeti, moving back toward the central Serengeti and eventually the southern calving grounds. This movement, while less dramatic than the northward journey, still produces excellent migration sightings for those positioned correctly.
October – Final Migration Crossings and Southern Return
October offers the last Mara River crossings of the season as herds build up pressure to move south following Kenya's deteriorating grazing. Crossings in October are often larger and more sustained than earlier in the season due to the accumulated pressure of the herd. At the same time, smaller groups of wildebeest begin trickling southward through the Central Serengeti. Wildlife viewing across all Northern Circuit parks remains excellent in October.
November – Short Rains and Green Season Beginning
The short rains typically arrive in mid to late November, transforming the landscape from dry golden tones to fresh green. The rains are generally afternoon showers rather than continuous rain, allowing morning game drives to proceed in perfect conditions. Accommodation rates begin dropping from peak season pricing in November, and park crowds thin considerably, creating a pleasant combination of good wildlife, lower cost, and uncrowded safari experience.
Zanzibar in October and November
October and November offer excellent Zanzibar conditions with warm sea temperatures, good visibility for snorkeling, and the transition between the southeast and northeast monsoon creating calm sea conditions along the protected west coast. November is an excellent month for combining a Northern Circuit safari with a Zanzibar beach extension.
