June & July – Start of Peak Dry Season — What to Expect

June and July mark the beginning of Tanzania’s peak dry safari season, offering cooler temperatures, clear skies, and exceptional wildlife viewing. As water sources begin to shrink, animals gather around rivers and watering holes, making game drives more rewarding. This is one of the best times to visit Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire National Park. The Great Migration starts moving toward the western and northern Serengeti, while the dry conditions create perfect opportunities for photography, Big Five sightings, and comfortable safari adventures.

June and July – Tanzania's Dry Season Begins

June marks the beginning of Tanzania's long dry season and the start of what most operators consider the peak safari period. Vegetation dries out rapidly as rain ceases, water sources reduce to permanent rivers and waterholes, and wildlife begins concentrating in predictable locations. Game viewing quality increases significantly from the dispersed conditions of the rainy season.

Tarangire in June and July – Elephant Concentration Begins

Tarangire National Park is transformed in June and July as the dry season drives hundreds of elephants from the wider ecosystem back to the permanent Tarangire River. By July, the riverbanks host some of the densest elephant concentrations seen anywhere in Africa. Lion prides become more active and visible as cover decreases. Giraffes, buffalo herds, and zebras all increase in density along the river corridor.

The Great Migration in June and July

In June, the wildebeest herds complete their movement northward through the Western Corridor of the Serengeti, passing through the Grumeti River where enormous crocodiles have been waiting since the dry season began. Grumeti crossings are less dramatic than the Mara crossings but equally intense at close range. By late July, the leading edge of the migration reaches the Northern Serengeti and the first Mara River crossings of the season begin.

Weather and Climate in June and July

June and July are the coolest months in Tanzania. Mornings in the Ngorongoro highlands can be genuinely cold, requiring warm layers before game drives. Days warm to a comfortable 22 to 26°C. Rain is essentially absent across the entire Northern Circuit. Clear skies and low humidity create excellent visibility and the warm afternoon light that photographers prize for golden-hour game drive conditions.
