January & February – Calving Season — What to Expect

The Calving Season – January and February in Tanzania

January and February mark the wildebeest calving season in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area, one of the most extraordinary natural events in the annual calendar. Hundreds of thousands of calves are born within a few weeks, and the resulting concentration of prey attracts the highest density of predators seen anywhere in Tanzania throughout the year.

Wildlife Highlights in January and February

The Ndutu plains in the southern Serengeti become the focus of the wildlife world during these months. Large super-prides of lions, some exceeding twenty animals, patrol the calving herds continuously. Cheetah mothers use the abundance of young prey to feed their cubs and build condition after the hard dry season. Hyena clans are at peak activity and wild dog packs from the Ndutu and Ngorongoro areas are frequently seen. For photographers and wildlife enthusiasts, these two months represent some of the most productive game-watching conditions of the entire year.

Weather and Landscape Conditions

January and February fall within the short dry period between the short rains and the long rains. The short grass plains of Ndutu are lush and green from the November and December rains but not saturated, allowing excellent vehicle access. Temperatures are warm during the day, typically 25 to 30°C, and comfortable at night. The green landscape provides beautiful photographic context against the golden savannah typical of dry season images.

Other Tanzania Activities in January and February

Kilimanjaro climbing conditions are excellent in January and February with generally clear weather and good visibility. Zanzibar has warm sea temperatures and calm Indian Ocean conditions ideal for snorkeling and diving at Mnemba Atoll. The combination of calving season safari with a Zanzibar beach extension makes January and February one of the best value months to visit Tanzania.
